Apple files patent for glass keyboard

  • Apple has filed for a new Keyboard patent.
  • The new patent is for a touch enabled glass keyboard.

Apple has filed for a new patent which showcases a touch enabled keyboard. The filed patent shows multi-layers on the keyboard. The top layer and the bottom which houses the trackpad is shown to have a transformable piece of glass. This could presumably change based on the applications being used, similar to what we have seen with the touch bar on the new Macs. According to digital trends the “patent drawings show that first glass layer offers the ability to become altered, potentially allowing the bottom half of the case to house a touchscreen which could then become tactile when the user has the use for a keyboard. This solution would help to alleviate the lack of precise physical feedback from the touch surface when a button is pressed.” Put simply, this new patent shows a glass keyboard with raised portions to denote the placement of keys and give users feedback when each key is pressed. This could eliminate the need for moving parts in the keyboard reducing the chances of failure. The feedback could be similar to the haptic feedback we saw with the home button on the iPhone 7.

The filed patent is simply called “Computer with keyboard” but it looks to be a lot more than that. Apple has been criticised for the butterfly mechanism on its keyboard, especially because dust manages to enter the keyboard housing. With the second generation, Apple added a silicone membrane to help with the problem. Bringing forth a touch enabled keyboard with raised positions for the keys could help eliminate the problem altogether, but how well it will work practically is something only time will tell. The touchscreen of a smartphone took some getting used to and has now become second nature for those that use a smartphone. How effective will a glass keyboard be and more importantly, how durable is a question that remains to be answered.

This isn’t the first time that we have seen a touch enabled keyboard on a laptop. Lenovo has had the Lenovo Yoga Book with a second display that doubles up as a writing pad when wanted and a keyboard when needed. The trend didn’t take off because there is no way to get feedback from the touchpad keyboard. Hopefully, Apple’s patent for raised keys and feedback from the touch enabled keyboard will change that.

India Emerging New Target For Patent Filing in AI: WIPO https://immunisip.com/news-articles-cat/india-emerging-new-target-for-patent-filing-in-ai-wipo/ https://immunisip.com/news-articles-cat/india-emerging-new-target-for-patent-filing-in-ai-wipo/#respond Fri, 01 Feb 2019 08:07:05 +0000 https://immunis.digitalgyb.com/?p=1115

India Emerging New Target For Patent Filing in AI: WIPO

India is emerging as a new target for patent filings in the field of Artificial Intelligence and is among the top countries for publications in specific categories such as computer vision and natural language processing, according to a UN report.

According to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Technology Trends report, 50 percent of all patents for AI – the replication of human intelligence by machines for use in industries such as transport and healthcare, for instance – have been published since 2013, adding up to more than 170,000 different patented ideas.

Australia, Canada, Germany, India and the UK hold prominent positions in publications in specific categories such as computer vision, natural language processing, speech processing, distributed AI and predictive analytics.

The report said that while major patent offices receiving patent filings in the AI field are France, Germany, the Republic of Korea and the UK, India is emerging as a new target for patent filing. The greatest number of patent applications are filed in the patent offices of U.S. and China, followed by Japan, South Korea, Germany, Australia and India.

The report noted that India was ranked eighth for first filings in 2015 and has enjoyed a high rate of annual growth during recent years (with an average of 33 percent in the three years up to 2015).

India ranks fourth in scientific publications (ahead of Japan), Italy, which ranks ninth, and Spain, which is 10th. India ranks third in fuzzy logic and fourth in machine learning, whereas it is eighth or lower in patenting activity.

“This suggests that India has strengths in AI research that might become even more evident within the next few years in terms of patenting activity,” it said.

The “upsurge” in patent applications for devices and machines powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the last five years, suggests that it could soon revolutionize all areas of daily life far beyond the tech world, the UN report said on January 31.

WIPO Director General Francis Gurry told journalists in Geneva the surge in patenting was “striking”, noting that AI research began in the 1950s.

“But there has been a quantum leap since about 2013, so we’re dealing with what is happening right now in a very fast-moving field,” he said.

By number, patent applications for machine learning, indicate that this is currently the dominant application of AI; think of apps that include ride-sharing services to minimize detours.

The fastest-growing AI area is deep learning”, however, which is used in speech recognition. This saw a 175-percent annual increase in patent applications from 2013 to 2016, far in excess of the 33 percent average for all patents in the same period.

The United States and China dominate the field of patent application, although only a fraction of China’s patents is filed abroad. US-based tech giant IBM leads by number of patent applications (8,290), followed by Microsoft (5,930).

Japan’s Toshiba has the next highest patent tally (5,223), ahead of South Korea’s Samsung (5,102) and Japan’s NEC Group (4,406).

China’s increasingly important role in the sector is also illustrated by the fact that Chinese organizations make up 17 of the top 20 academic players in AI patenting, as well as 10 of the top 20 in AI-related scientific publications.

In coming years, AI is set to grow with “major military and economic” uses, Gurry said, before highlighting the importance of proposed WIPO-led discussions between Member States, on legal and ethical issues relating to intellectual property rights that have been raised by the technology.

“One would expect that the strategic focus of major geopolitical players will turn to their positioning in relation to AI,” he said.

Internet search giants have also been key to the AI revolution, the WIPO report shows, with Google (US) and Baidu (China) embracing the potential of the technology early on, just as Microsoft and Apple did before them.

In addition to the US and China’s large populations, the WIPO head noted the importance of State-led support for innovation in both places, which included investing in technology hubs and even training specialized patent officers.

Sanofi loses Lantus patent claims against Mylan

U.S. generics drugmaker Mylan N.V. said on Thursday the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected French pharma company Sanofi’s patent infringement claims related to two formulations of its blockbuster insulin drug Lantus.

Sanofi has previously filed patent infringement suits against other rivals, including Merck and Co and Eli Lilly & Co, to block cheaper versions of the diabetes drug from coming to the market.

The company is heavily reliant on Lantus, its leading product with sales of 4.62 billion euros ($5.26 billion) in 2017.

Sanofi’s Paris-listed shares fell 1 percent. The company declined to comment.

Lantus is a long-acting insulin used to treat adults with type 2 diabetes and adults and pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes to control high blood sugar.

Sanofi, which settled with Lilly allowing it to launch Basaglar, an insulin similar to Lantus in 2016, sued Mylan in October 2017.

The case includes some patents covering a disposable injection pen version, Lantus SoloSTAR. That litigation is pending and no trial date has been set, Mylan said.

Mylan’s generic versions of Lantus and Lantus SoloSTAR, developed with India’s Biocon, are being reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Apple Patent Turns Car Windscreen Into Giant Augmented Reality Screen

Apple has filed a patent for an augmented reality windscreen that can display map directions and FaceTime video calls.

Spotted by Patently Apple, the plans were submitted to the patent office earlier this month. They would convert the windscreen into a heads up display (HUD.) Apple stresses in the patent that content would not block the view of the road, but instead overlay. Think of it like maps highlighting the correct road to turn into.

The technology would rely on a range of sensors in the car itself including: Infrared cameras, light beam scanning devices, ultrasonic sensors, depth cameras, radar devices and GPS.

Beyond maps, a HUD windscreen would allow drivers to better monitor their driving speed, Apple stated.

As for FaceTime, Apple hopes it can help drivers communicate visually while driving. “In some embodiments, an augmented reality display system included in a vehicle enables visual communication between an occupant of the vehicle and a remotely located user, including an occupant of a separate vehicle.”

Another feature in the patent—titled Panicky Occupant Detection—would monitor drivers’ stress levels by observing their eye movement, body posture, body temperature, eye blink rate, heart rate and body gestures. The HUD would then adjust which display elements are shown on the windscreen.

Apple ordered to pay WiLAN $145M for infringing two patents https://immunisip.com/news-articles-cat/apple-ordered-to-pay-wilan-145m-for-infringing-two-patents/ https://immunisip.com/news-articles-cat/apple-ordered-to-pay-wilan-145m-for-infringing-two-patents/#respond Thu, 02 Aug 2018 10:02:16 +0000 https://immunis.digitalgyb.com/?p=1217

Apple ordered to pay WiLAN $145M for infringing two patents

According to a filing with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, the jury returned the $141.1 million verdict in favor of WiLAN after deliberating for an hour and a half. Evidence from both sides were presented to jurors over the course of seven days.

Apple was found in infringement of two patents covering wireless communications technology, according to a statement WiLAN provided to Reuters. Both patents, one for a “Method and Apparatus for Bandwidth Request/Grant Protocols in a Wireless Communication System” and another for “Adaptive Call Admission Control for Use in a Wireless Communication System,” targeted Apple’s iPhone.

The trial dates back to 2014, when WiLAN put Apple on notice for infringing on six patents with its iPhone and iPad products. The intellectual property included in WiLAN’s accusation belonged to the same patent family as a separate patent at issue in a Florida case pending at the time, Apple argued in its bid for a finding of non-infringement.

According to WiLAN’s complaint, however, the patents-in-suit in the California case, including one relating to VoLTE technology, were distinct from those leveraged in prior litigation. The California jury agreed.

Apple has tangled with WiLAN before. The Canadian patent firm first sued Apple in 2007 over the tech giant’s use of Wi-Fi technology in a variety of commercial products. Another complaint lodged in 2010 claimed Apple was in infringement of patented Bluetooth technology.

More recently, a jury in 2013 found in favor of Apple in a suit involving Alcatel-Lucent, Dell, Hewlett Packard, HTC and other major tech corporations. Asserting two wireless technology patents against the companies, WiLAN sought $248 million in damages and was able to secure license and settlement agreements from all parties except Apple, which was ultimately able to invalidate claims from one patent-in-suit.

WiLAN was founded in 1992 as a company rooted in developing and commercializing wireless technology. In 2006, after “realizing the value that its intellectual property brought to industry,” the firm transformed into a patent holdings entity and holds a large number of properties which are used in litigation against big-name corporations.

Following today’s decision, Presiding Judge Dana M. Sabraw directed both parties to mediation prior to submitting post-trial motions. A joint status report is due on Aug. 10.
